Colombia

What you need to know to start investing in Colombia, in local currency and with regulated institutions.

Regulator & deposit protection

The Superintendencia Financiera de Colombia (SFC) supervises banks, brokers and pension funds; the Bolsa de Valores de Colombia (BVC) is the national exchange.

Fogafín (Fondo de Garantías de Instituciones Financieras) insures savings accounts and CDTs at member banks up to a set limit per person per institution — confirm the current figure at fogafin.gov.co before relying on a specific number.

How to access government bonds

Colombia does not have a single retail direct-purchase portal for government bonds (TES) like Mexico or Brazil — individuals typically get exposure through mutual funds (fondos de inversión colectiva, FICs) or a SFC-regulated broker, rather than buying TES one-off directly.

Common instruments here

  • CDT (certificado de depósito a término — fixed-term bank deposit)
  • FICs (fondos de inversión colectiva — pooled funds, including money-market and diversified options)
  • TES government bonds (usually via a fund or broker)
  • Acciones on the BVC
  • Pensión voluntaria (voluntary pension accounts, separate from the mandatory system)

Taxes, briefly

Colombia taxes most investment gains as "ganancia ocasional" or ordinary income depending on the case, with specific exempt brackets and rules that are adjusted yearly by the DIAN. Given the complexity and frequent changes, confirm your specific situation directly with the DIAN (dian.gov.co) or an accountant rather than assuming a flat rate.

Your first steps

  1. Build your emergency fund and confirm your debts are not consuming more than the returns you could realistically earn.

  2. Open a CDT at a Fogafín-member bank, or a FIC through your bank's app, for your first taste of a regulated return above a plain savings account.

  3. Once comfortable, open an account with an SFC-regulated commissionaire (comisionista de bolsa) for broader access to funds, TES exposure and BVC-listed stocks.

  4. Review your mandatory and voluntary pension contributions — many people in Colombia under-use the voluntary side's tax benefits.

Frequently asked questions

Is a CDT a good first investment in Colombia?
For most beginners, yes — it is simple, protected by Fogafín up to the current limit, and pays more than a plain savings account. It is not designed to beat inflation by a wide margin over long periods; that is what diversified funds and equities are for, later.
What is a FIC?
A fondo de inversión colectiva pools many investors' money into a professionally managed portfolio — similar in concept to a mutual fund elsewhere in the region. Options range from very conservative money-market FICs to more diversified, higher-risk ones.
How do I check if a platform is regulated in Colombia?
Search the entity on the SFC's own registry (superfinanciera.gov.co) before depositing money. Being registered does not eliminate market risk, but it does confirm the entity is supervised.
